HISTORY
Beverly Howard was born to Paul and Isabel Howard on the Lunar colony of Copernicus City in the year 2324. Both Howards died when Beverly was very young and she was raised by her grandmother, Felisa Howard. They left Copernicus City for the Arvada III colony, where they lived through a terrible colony-wide disaster. The colonists' modern medical supplies were completely exhausted during the disaster. It was then that Beverly learned traditional medicinal uses for various plants and herbs and developed her life-long passion for medicine and healing. They would later move to the Caldos colony, where Beverly would assist Felisa in her job as a healer.

When she was eighteen, Beverly left Caldos for Earth to attend Starfleet Academy in San Francisco. There, she met Jack Crusher, a fellow student. Before Beverly graduated in 2350 with a Doctor of Medicine, she would marry Jack and they would have a son together, Wesley Crusher. Jack died in 2354, while serving Captain Jean-Luc Picard aboard the Stargazer. After her husband's death, she and Wesley became extremely close, and Wesley went with her wherever she was assigned by Starfleet. Ten years later, Beverly would also serve under Picard, aboard the Federation's Flagship, the Enterprise. Aside from her appointment for a year as the Head of Starfleet Medical, she has been the Chief Medical Officer of the Enterprise ever since. In that time, she's made several important discoveries and medical advances, including successfully restoring former Borg drones to their pre-assimilation state, being one of the first people to uncover the origins of all humanoid species in the galaxy, and developing cures and treatments for many diseases.

In many ways, the Enterprise is more her home than any planet. Other than her grandmother back on Caldos and Wesley at Starfleet Academy, almost all the people she cares most deeply about are aboard the Enterprise. She shares a bond with Captain Picard, having become friends years ago through Jack. They are first and foremost best friends, but there has always been an undercurrent of romantic attachment ever since Beverly boarded the Enterprise... for even longer than that on Picard's side, Beverly recently learned. Her other close friendships on the ship include Deanna Troi, an empath and ship's counselor, her head nurse Alyssa Ogawa, and the rest of the Enterprise's senior staff.

PERSONALITY
Compassionate: This is perhaps Beverly's greatest strength. Whenever she sees someone hurting, physically or emotionally, she will do everything she can to help them, no matter who they are or where they come from. She even insists on treating the Federation's most formidable enemy: the Borg. Her patients can almost always expect to be treated with warmth, patience, and understanding and her friends know she is always there to lend a sympathetic ear or a shoulder to cry on.

Ethical: Her ethics are highly informed by her commitment to the Hippocratic Oath (especially Do No Harm) as well as Federation values of cooperation, justice, and respect for other cultures. However, this does not mean she will not buck her Starfleet training on occasion, and she has several times come into conflict with the Prime Directive, usually because she is protecting a patient in some way. She is a doctor first, member of Starfleet second.

Intelligent: Beverly is arguably the best doctor in Starfleet, with a wide ranging expertise, though her focus is in primary care. While medicine is her main field, she loves picking up new skills, relishing more in the challenge of it than in any sort of recognition or status it might get her. She is also a very strategic thinker when the occasion arises, whether it's in a game of poker, solving a murder, or fighting the Borg.

Stubborn: Once she decides she is going to do something, there's very little you can do to stop her, as she is hard to intimidate and will usually not hesitate to call someone out on something she thinks is wrong, whether they be her captain or an omnipotent energy being. At times, her stubbornness will emerge as a grudge: once her good opinion is lost, it is very difficult to get it back. Other times, her absolute convictions will drive her to make reckless decisions with her own career or even her life - though she will not put others in danger.

Guarded: While she's not exactly shy or unfriendly and can be quite affectionate with those she knows well, there is a certain distance Beverly keeps between herself and others, which leads some to describe her as cold upon first meeting. Much of this stems from a fear of insulting or hurting others - she has an acerbic tongue that got her into a lot of trouble when she was younger, so now she works hard to keep those thoughts hidden. But she also fears for herself, of opening up and getting hurt again, so she is particularly wary around potential romantic partners.

Family-Oriented: Especially her son Wesley and her Enterprise family. She harbors a great fear of losing those she cares about and being left alone, having lost her parents at a young age and then later her husband. If someone wants to manipulate her, targeting her loved ones would be the easiest way to do it: she will do anything to protect them. And a forced separation from them will take a massive toll on her emotionally.
