What Is the Holodeck, Anyway?
The Holographic Environment Simulator, also called a holodeck or holosuite, is a powerful computer that essentially creates a fully immersive virtual reality - while in the holodeck, everything looks and feels like it would in the real world. It's primarily used for entertainment and recreation, but can also be used for training or research. The computer runs on voice commands, so while someone is using the holodeck, they simply have to ask the computer to make any changes or to start or begin a program. There is also a manual control panel outside the holodeck in case of emergency.

Riverview's holodeck is a mirror of one you'd find on the USS Enterprise-D in the year 2370. It is located downtown near the hospital (conveniently right on the path between Beverly's apartment and work), in an unobtrusive hole-in-the-wall sort of place. The entrance to it has a Starfleet insignia engraved on the door, but otherwise there's no signs or other markings. Within the building are only two rooms: the holodeck itself and a waiting room, which essentially looks like the corridor of the Enterprise. The holodeck is open for any character to use and while it arrived with only a few programs preloaded, Beverly is happy to help people program new ones - or if your character is interested in doing the programming themselves, she'll teach you how!
Guidelines
- Cost: It's free!!! Because Beverly is a dirty socialist!!! IC there's a sign-up app on their phones where characters can pick a time slot to use the holodeck.
- Characters: Players cannot create a holographic version of any character that could be appable to Riverview, whether they are currently in game or not. And while some holo-characters develop sentience within Star Trek canon (eg Moriarty, Vic, and The EMH), that will not be the case here.
- Settings: Just use some common sense here - don't have your character recreate their entire planet or anything else that would break game mechanics!
- What Happens in the Holodeck, Stays in the Holodeck: Literally. Any items or characters created within the holodeck can't leave the confines of the holodeck for more than a minute or so before dissipating.
- Safety Protocols: The holodeck defaults to having intense safety features - for example if you fall off a cliff in a rock-climbing program, it'll be no worse than if you tripped and fell while walking. If a character wants to disengage the safety protocols, they can, but they would face whatever consequences as they would normally in the real world.
- Overrides: Beverly Crusher, Odo, Jim Kirk, and Leonard McCoy all have the appropriate command codes/voice recognition to completely override the holodeck. They will only do this in the event of an emergency. You know, like....
- Malfunctions: What kind of holodeck would it be if there were no malfunctions? If you're interested in plotting out some wacky holodeck shenanigans, don't hesitate to contact me through PM to this journal or on plurk @ curiouslyenough. If you're interested in your character trying to hack the system, it'd be difficult but not impossible - just let me know!
Existing Holoprograms
Dixon Hill
A holoprogram based on a series of detective novels first published in 1934 by Tracy Tormé (a fictionalized author in the Star Trek universe, but actually a real world screenwriter for TNG), following the adventures of the eponymous Private Investigator Dixon Hill as he solves crimes in 1930s and 1940s San Francisco. In the program, users can take on the role of any of the characters, from the detective himself to the femme fatale to the shady mobster. There are several titles in the series available, including The Big Good-Bye, The Long Dark Tunnel, and The (Curse of the) Black Orchid.
Crusher-4
A recreation of the dance studio where Beverly first learned to dance. Includes a ballet barre, floor to ceiling mirrors, and a wooden dance floor. The computer will play music from a wide selection of genres - though notably, options from the mid-1990s through the first half of the 21st century will be scarce and very different from what characters from other canons might expect - so alas, no Cuban Shuffle but at least there's always Stayin' Alive. The computer will also supply any needed dance partners or equipment for practice.
Bridge of the Enterprise-D
Part of a Starfleet Command Training program. The user can pick from a wide variety of scenarios, from a simulated space battle, to a risky rescue mission, to navigating a mysterious and dangerous nebula. Does not come with simulations of any other part of the ship eg engineering or medical.
Beach
A simple relaxation program by the seaside. From the beach planet in The Adventure Zone, Cycle 21.
Kattegat
The city of Kattegat, Norway in the year 816.
Enterprise NCC-1701 (AOS)
A recreation of the USS Enterprice (NCC-1701) from the alternate reality, for now only with a couple of decks available: bridge, observation decks, engineering and shuttle bay, and the corridors and turbolift connecting the different locations.
Request a Program!
Anyone is welcome to submit ideas for holodeck programs in the comment section below - doesn't matter what canon your character is from or what their technological abilities are, Beverly will be happy to help them out with the programming. IC assume it probably takes about a week for new programs to get online. If you have any questions, you can always leave a comment here or send me a private message on plurk @ curiouslyenough!
